How long does a UK visit visa take? 2026 processing times explained

A UK Standard Visitor visa usually takes 3 weeks to process when you apply from outside the UK, in line with the official Home Office customer service standard. This is the most common route for tourism, visiting family or friends, business trips and short private medical treatment. Applicants who need a faster answer can pay for a Priority (5 working days) or Super Priority (next working day) service, where it’s offered in their country.

This guide sets out the current GOV.UK processing times, what starts and stops the clock, why visit visa applications get delayed, and how a solicitor can help if your case is more complex than a straightforward holiday visit.

How long does a UK visit visa take to process?

The standard target for a UK Standard Visitor visa is 3 weeks (15 working days) from your biometric appointment, if you’re applying from outside the UK. The Home Office measures this against a published customer service standard, not a legal guarantee — 90% of non-settlement applications are targeted for a decision within 3 weeks, 98% within 6 weeks, and 100% within 12 weeks.

If you’re extending or switching a visit visa from inside the UK, the standard timeframe is longer, at up to 8 weeks.

When does the processing clock start and stop?

The Home Office starts processing your visit visa application from the day you attend your biometric appointment, not the day you submit the online form. If you’re applying from outside the UK, this is either the day you attend a Visa Application Centre to give your fingerprints and photograph, or the working day after you verify your identity through the UK Immigration: ID Check app, where that option is offered.

The clock stops the moment you receive a decision letter or email — an approval or a refusal. From 25 February 2026, most visa nationals applying for a visit visa now receive an eVisa only, rather than a physical vignette sticker in their passport, so you’ll need a UKVI account to view and share your immigration status.

You can check your specific processing time using the GOV.UK visa processing time checker before or after you apply.

Can you pay for a faster decision?

Yes — the Priority Visa Service usually returns a decision within 5 working days for an extra £500, and the Super Priority Visa Service aims for a decision by the end of the next working day for an extra £1,000, where either is available.

  • Priority service: available for most visit, work and settlement routes in many countries, added at the point of application, before you book your biometric appointment.
  • Super Priority service: faster still, but availability is more limited — it’s widely offered for in-country switches and extensions, and only in selected overseas locations for entry clearance applications.
  • You cannot upgrade to a faster service after you’ve submitted a standard application — the choice is made when you apply and pay.
  • Paying for a faster service speeds up the decision only. It does not improve your chances of approval, and there is usually no refund if your case takes longer because the Home Office needs more information.

Why do UK visit visa applications take longer than expected?

Most delays beyond the 3-week standard come down to a small number of recurring issues:

  • Incomplete or unclear financial evidence — bank statements that don’t show a stable pattern, or unexplained large deposits.
  • Missing or inconsistent supporting documents, such as an invitation letter, accommodation proof, or employer letter that doesn’t match the rest of the application.
  • Genuine visitor concerns — the caseworker isn’t satisfied you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit, often because of vague travel plans or a weak explanation of ties to your home country.
  • Additional checks, including verification of documents or details with other government departments, which the Home Office is not required to complete within the standard 3-week target.
  • High-volume periods, such as school summer holidays and around major UK events, when application centres and caseworkers see a spike in demand.

If your application goes beyond the published processing time and you haven’t been contacted, you’re entitled to contact UKVI directly to ask for an update.

How Adam Bernard Solicitors can help ?

A straightforward tourist visit visa doesn’t always need legal help. But instructing an immigration solicitor is worth considering if you have a previous UK visa refusal, complex or self-employed finances, a long or unusual travel history, or you’re applying as part of a family group with dependants. At Adam Bernard Solicitors, our SRA-regulated immigration team reviews the supporting evidence before it’s submitted, addresses genuine visitor concerns directly in the application, and can advise on Standard Visitor visa applications for tourism, family visits, business activity and short-term medical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a UK visit visa take from outside the UK?

Around 3 weeks from your biometric appointment, in line with the Home Office's published customer service standard.

How long does a UK visit visa take if I'm extending it from inside the UK?

Up to 8 weeks, as there's no priority option for most in-country visit visa extensions and the standard is longer than for applications made overseas.

Can I speed up my UK visit visa application?

Yes, where it's offered in your country you can pay for the Priority service (around 5 working days) or Super Priority service (next working day) for an additional fee, chosen at the point you apply.

When should I apply for a UK visit visa?

You can apply up to 3 months before your intended travel date. Applying early gives more room to resolve any document requests without affecting your travel plans.

Does paying for a faster decision guarantee my visa will be approved?

No. Priority and Super Priority only affect how quickly a decision is made — the outcome still depends on meeting the Standard Visitor visa eligibility requirements.

What happens if my visit visa application takes longer than the standard time?

You should be contacted by UKVI if your case will take longer. If the standard processing time has passed and you haven't heard anything, you can contact UKVI to ask for an update.
