What is the Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) was first introduced in March 2023 in the Section 75 of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 which provides the legal basis for the Secretary of State to require individuals of a description specified in the Immigration Rules (including those who do not need a visa, entry clearance or other specified immigration status) to obtain permission to travel, in the form of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), in advance of their journey to the UK. Travelers that are transiting through the UK who do not currently need a visa for short stays, or who do not already have an immigration status, or even visitors, will be required to have an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation).

You may be familiar if you have travelled to the United States, it is very similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) system and the European Union’s ETIAS, working as a security measure for those travelling to the UK that don’t need a visa. It is an affordable and simple application made before traveling in order to notify the government of your details and enable them to perform security checks before you arrive.

If a person hasn’t completed the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and does not have one, their travel will be refused boarding by the airline or for whatever reason that does not happen they will be refused entry on arrival.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) programme is set to expand in 2025.

You will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation if you are planning to do one or more of the following below:

  • Enter and stay in the UK for up to six months as a tourist, including as a business visitor or if you are studying
Enter and stay in the UK for up to three months if you are on the Creative Worker Visa concession
Coming to the UK for a permitted paid engagement
    Transiting through the UK

Overview of who is required to obtain an ETA

Travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before visiting the UK. This includes citizens from nations like Canada, Japan, and Australia.

Additionally, those planning short stays for tourism or business must secure an ETA. It is crucial for eligible visitors to stay informed about this requirement to ensure a smooth entry into the UK.

Factors influencing the need for an ETA

Several factors determine whether you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) when visiting the UK. Your nationality plays a crucial role, as some countries are exempt while others require it.

Duration of stay also influences this requirement. Short visits typically necessitate an ETA, especially for tourism or business purposes. Understanding these elements is essential for ensuring compliance and smooth travel experiences to the UK.

Travelers should remain aware of ETA requirements that may vary based on nationality or purpose of travel. Preparing adequately will enhance your experience and reduce unexpected challenges at the border. Stay informed to enjoy a hassle-free journey in the UK.

FAQs

Will I need Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK?

If you’re considering visiting the UK, you may need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you depart. This requirement applies to citizens of visa-exempt countries who wish to enter for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

The ETA is designed to enhance border security and streamline the entry process. Knowing if you’ll need one is crucial to avoid any last-minute travel disruptions and ensure a hassle-free arrival in this beautiful country.

Who does not need an ETA?

You do not need an ETA to travel or transit through the UK if any of these apply to you:

  • you have a UK visa
  • you have permission to live, work or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme)
  • you are a British or Irish citizen
  • you are travelling with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport
  • you live in Ireland, and you are travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man

How long is the ETA valid for?

Once approved, the UK ETA will be valid for two years and can be used for multiple visits to the UK.

If your passport expires during that period, you will need to get a new ETA.

How much does a UK ETA cost?

A UK ETA will cost £10.

What should I do if my ETA is not approved?

If it’s refused, travellers will either need to apply for a standard visa, apply for a temporary work visa, or get a transit visa.
