FIFA World Cup 2026 - ESTA & Visa Guide
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is almost here — and for millions of football fans across the United Kingdom, the dream of watching England, Scotland, or your favourite nation play live in America is now within reach. But before you book your flights, there is one crucial question you need to answer: do you have the right travel authorisation to enter the United States?
Many UK fans assume that because Britain and the US have a strong relationship, they can simply turn up at the airport and board a plane. That is not the case. The US requires every foreign visitor — including British passport holders — to obtain prior travel permission. Get it wrong, and you could be denied boarding before you even leave the UK.
In this guide, the immigration specialists at Adam Bernard Solicitors explain exactly what UK fans need, step by step — from ESTA applications to what happens if you are refused.
keypoint: The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across 16 host cities in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The final takes place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July.
Do UK Citizens Need a Visa to Watch the World Cup in the USA?
The short answer is: not a traditional visa — but you do need a travel authorisation called ESTA. Let us explain exactly what that means.
The United Kingdom is one of 42 countries included in the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). Under this programme, eligible British citizens can visit the United States for tourism, business, or transit for up to 90 days without applying for a full US visa. This covers the entire duration of the World Cup, which runs for 39 days.
However, travelling under the VWP does not mean you travel without documentation. You must apply for and receive an approved ESTA — the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation — before you depart. Without an approved ESTA, airlines will not allow you to board a US-bound flight.
What is ESTA?
ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorisation. It is an online pre-screening system introduced by the US Department of Homeland Security. When you apply, your details are checked against security and immigration databases before you travel.
Think of ESTA as a digital travel permit. It is not stamped in your passport, it is not a visa sticker, and you never visit an embassy to get it. Everything is done online.
Key facts about ESTA for UK citizens
•      Valid for two years from approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first
•      Allows multiple trips to the USA, each up to 90 days
•      Covers tourism, business, and transit — including watching World Cup matches
•      Must be linked to the specific passport you travel with
•      Applies to every traveller, including children and infants — each person needs their own
How to Apply for ESTA: Step-by-Step for UK Fans
Applying for ESTA is straightforward if you follow the correct steps. Most applications are approved within minutes, though the US government recommends applying at least 72 hours before you travel.
Step 1: Check your passport
You must hold a valid British Citizen passport that is biometric (also called an e-passport or chip passport). These have been standard in the UK since 2006 and feature a small gold symbol on the front cover. Emergency travel documents do not qualify for the VWP. Your passport must remain valid for your entire stay in the USA — the US does not require six months of remaining validity as some other countries do, but your passport must not expire while you are there.
Step 2: Go to the official ESTA website
Visit ESTA Website — the official US Customs and Border Protection website. Do not use any other website. You will be asked to create an account or log in.
Step 3: Complete the application form
The form takes around ten minutes to complete. You will need to provide:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your passport
- Your passport number, issue date, and expiry date
- Your date of birth and country of birth
- Your home address and contact details
- Your travel plans, including your intended arrival date
- Answers to eligibility questions about your travel and health history
Step 4: Pay the fee
The current ESTA application fee is $40.27 USD (approximately £32 at current exchange rates). This is payable by Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Be aware that your bank may apply a foreign transaction fee since the payment is processed in US dollars.
Step 5: Receive your authorisation
Most applications receive an immediate decision — either “Authorisation Approved”, “Pending”, or “Travel Not Authorised”. If your application is pending, check back within 72 hours. You do not need to print your ESTA — the authorisation is linked electronically to your passport and will be verified by airlines automatically.
What is FIFA PASS — and Do UK Fans Need It?
FIFA PASS (FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System) is a special visa appointment system launched by the US Department of State in coordination with FIFA and the White House. It was designed specifically for World Cup ticket holders who need a US visitor visa but face long wait times for embassy appointments in their country.
FIFA PASS gives confirmed ticket holders the ability to access prioritised visa interview slots, bypassing appointment backlogs that in some countries stretch to over 300 days.
Do UK fans need to use FIFA PASS?
Almost certainly not. Because the United Kingdom is part of the US Visa Waiver Programme, the vast majority of British fans will simply apply for ESTA online and will not need a visa appointment at all. You do not need FIFA PASS if you are eligible for ESTA.
FIFA PASS is primarily intended for fans from countries that are not part of the VWP — for example, fans from Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, and many other nations whose teams have qualified for the 2026 tournament but who require a full US visa.
