SEASONAL WORKER 

The Seasonal Worker visa offers overseas national the opportunity to work in certain temporary jobs in the UK horticulture and poultry sectors, such as fruit picking, vegetable harvesting and other farm-related activities.
For horticulture Seasonal Worker visas you can apply at any time of the year; however with the poultry Seasonal Worker visas, you must apply by 15 November each year The Seasonal Worker route is subject to an annual quota, which for 2025 is 45,000, divided between the horticulture sector and the poultry production sector. There are 43,000 visas for the horticulture sector and 2,000 for poultry production.

 In order to apply for the Seasonal Worker visa you will need to have a sponsor and meet the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

You must be 18 or over when you apply and have both the following:

  • A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number from your UK sponsor
  • Enough money to support yourself in the UK – you will usually need to have at least £1,270 available unless you are exempt

The employer must be licenced by the UK Home Office to sponsor seasonal workers under this visa category. This means the employer must be an A-rated approved scheme operator within either the UK’s horticultural or poultry production sector with:

  • An endorsement from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to be an approved scheme operator on the Seasonal Worker route; and
  • A licence from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority

Your employer must make sure your jobs pays at least the minimum wage and follows the UK rules for how many hours a week you work.

Certificate Of Sponsorship Requirements

For the CoS to be valid, it must meet the relevant requirement set out in Appendix Temporary Work – Seasonal Worker. The employer must confirm the following in the CoS:

  • That they are sponsoring you on a Seasonal Worker route
  • Your personal information (such as name, date of birth, nationality), passport details and contact details
  • The start and end date of your employment
  • Total weekly hours of work, which must comply with the Working Time Regulations
  • Where you will carry out your employment – this should include your main work address and any other regular work addresses, if relevant
  • Whether they used an agent (such as recruitment agency, employment business or other intermediary) to find you and, if so, details of that agent
  • The job title
  • The relevant SOC 2020 occupation code which must be an eligible occupation in the horticulture sector or the poultry production sector
  • The main duties of the role for which you are being sponsored
  • Whether your employer has certified your maintenance
  • That the role meets all relevant legislation, such as the relevant Agricultural Wages Order rate where this applies, National Minimum Wage and Working Time Regulations
  • That the role you are being sponsored for meets the salary requirements (and, where applicable, the minimum hours requirement) for this route

Application process

You must submit an application online from outside the UK. Applications cannot be made from inside the UK, as it is not possible to switch into this route.

As part of the application, you will need to prove your identity and provide your supporting documents either through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attending a visa application centre.

The supporting documents include the following:

  • Valid passport or other document that shows your identity and nationality
  • Certificate of Sponsorship assigned by the UK sponsor
  • Evidence of enough personal savings to support yourself while in the UK, for examples, bank statements, unless your sponsor has confirmed financial support on the CoS
  • Criminal Record Certificate
  • Tuberculosis certificate, if you are from a country where you to take the test

In some cases, the caseworker deciding the application may request additional documentation, depending on the circumstances.

If you have any documents that are not in English or Welsh, you must provide a certified translation of the documents.

The application fee is £298. Once you have applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you will usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

Once the application is the accepted, you will be allowed to stay in the UK for up to 6 months for horticulture work and from 2 October to 31 December each year for poultry work.

What You Can And Cannot Do

Whilst on this visa, you can do the following:

  • Work in the job described in your certificate of sponsorship
  • Study (for some courses you will need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate

 

You cannot do the following:

 

  • Take a permanent job
  • Work in a second job or a job that is not described in your certificate of sponsorship
  • Claim public funds
  • Bring family members with you
